There are certain habits you exhibit in your relationship that just need to be dropped with the year about to end.
Like every year before it, year 2017 has been filled with enough of everything that makes a society tick.
Some of these things we absolutely love - beautiful weddings, romantic proposals, unforgettable concerts, smashing shows, social media moments – and some of these things we’d rather not see anymore - some disastrous occurrences, certain politicians and personalities as well as some behaviours.
Below we list seven of the relationship patterns that you should leave behind in 2017.
1. Playing hard to get
2017 should be the last year where feelings for a guy will be hidden or downplayed simply because you want to conform of society’s idea of dating and relationships.
Please say yes if you want to go on a date with him, please kiss and go ahead to have sex on the first date if that’s really what you want to do.
If you are not doing it, let it be because you do not want to. Let it be because it is against your beliefs and values. Not because of what your friends will say or what society will think of you.
2. “Men are scum”
Let this year be the last we hear of the men are scum pop culture slang.
2017 has shown so vividly, more than ever before, that being scum is genderless. Being a bad partner is not a function of your gender - men cheat, women cheat.
Everyone needs to be the best they can be to the love of their life and stop apportioning blame.
We all need to fix up our lives.
3. Refusing to shoot your shot
If you are yet to get the memo, this is it. More women are becoming bolder at going after men they’re crushing on.
Beautiful relationships these days don’t begin only when the guy initiates things.
Guys do not have to ask you all the time. Good things happen to women who shoot their shots.
The idea that a guy has to be the one to ask you out should be left in 2017.
4. Communicating with the Internet
Choosing to post your relationship problems on social media before discussing and conversing with your partner needs to stop this year, too.
It’s OK to tweet about it if you’re comfortable with it, it’s Ok to also send your relationship problems to relationship blogs, too, but that should be the last resort. Not what yu automatically do first when you have issues in your relationship.
5. Cheating
It’s silly to think women do not cheat. And even sillier to assume that we don’t know that women are arguably worse cheats that men.
Please let that stop in 2017. Be a faithful girlfriend, a faithful wife in 2018, abeg.
6. Staying in an obviously bad relationship
Whatever your reasons are, you are only doing yourself a disservice and suffering in vain if your relationship is obviously irreversibly bad and you refuse to get out of it.
It’s even worse when you are unmarried but you choose to remain because of what people will say, because you have been together for long or because you want to keep your body count low.
Please stop it in 2017. Be bold and step out of that relationship once it no longer does anytingn for your spirit soul or body.
7. Opposite-sex besties
This one is quite controversial but as we have already previously opined in this article, any bestie that’ll jeopardise your relationship, the ones whose presence strains the bond between you and your partner… you have to find a way around it.
Bottom line is this; every behavioural pattern that hurts your relationship needs to be left in 2017.
Do better in the new year.
