FG Felicitates with Saraki on his 55th birthday

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday congratulated the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on his 55th birthday.
This was confirmed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President said he joined all members of the National Assembly, friends and family in celebrating Saraki.
He said the President of the Senate had made his mark on the political scene.
“The President believes that at 55, and having served as a two-term governor, senator and Senate President, Dr. Saraki, has demonstrated commitment in the pursuit of a prosperous, united and peaceful Nigeria.
“President Buhari prays that God Almighty will grant him more years of good health, wisdom and fulfilment in the service of God and country,” the statement read.
Also, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport, Gbenga Ashafa, sent out a warm message to felicitate with Saraki as he marked his 55th birthday on Tuesday.
Ashafa, who represents the Lagos East Senatorial District at the Senate, said, “Happy 55th birthday to your Excellency, the President of the Nigerian Senate @bukolasaraki.”
Ashafa, who also commended the leadership of the Senate under Saraki, said the Senate “has transformed into a more dynamic and vibrant institution in the service of the Nigerian people.”
Meanwhile, Saraki, his wife, Oluwatoyin, and the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, were on Tuesday conspicuously absent at a special prayer for Saraki at 55.
The prayer was organised in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, by Saraki’s associates and supporters.
No reason was however given during the prayers for the absence of Saraki and his wife as well as Ahmed, who usually played the role of the chief host at such a ceremony.
But Saraki’s media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, informed one of our correspondents that the Senate President was not in Ilorin because the Senate resumed plenary and Saraki preferred national assignment to personal concern.
Also Ahmed’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, in a text message said the governor did not attend the prayer so as not to negate Saraki’s preference for low key birthday celebration.
The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad, however, led dignitaries at the prayer.
He said Saraki had sustained the legacies of his late father, Olusola.

Baby born with heart Outside Her Body Survives Operation

A baby, identified as Vanellope Hope Wilkins, born with her heart outside her body has survived surgery to insert it back into her chest, CNN has reported.
The baby who now three weeks old, was delivered by a team of 50 medical professionals at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, UK, on November 22.
She was born with ectopia cordis, a rare conprivate part condition causing her heart to grow outside her body.
To correct the condition the team of surgeons put the baby girl through three intensive surgeries to put her heart inside her chest. She is now recovering under strict medical watch.
Naomi Findlay, Vanellope’s mother, said she had prepared her mind that anything could happen, and that was how she could cope with feelings that came with the situation.
“I had prepared myself for the worst; that was my way of dealing with it. I had brought an outfit to hospital that she could wear if she died,” Vanellope’s mother said in a statement on Tuesday.”I genuinely didn’t think my baby would survive, but the staff at Glenfield have been amazing.”
Dr. Frances Bu’Lock, consultant in pediatric cardiology at Glenfield Hospital said, “I deal with babies with heart problems all the time, some of them very complicated.
“This is only the second case in 30 years that I’ve seen this particular condition, it’s extremely rare,” she said. “Vanellope is the first baby to survive this operation in the UK.”
The condition was first discovered at nine weeks of pregnancy after an ultrasound scan showed that the heart and bowels were growing outside the body. Another scan at 16 weeks showed that the bowel had gone back inside but the heart did not.
Four teams of doctors at Glenfield — which is part of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) — were scheduled to deliver the baby on November 22 by caesarean section to reduce the risk of infection as well as the risk of injuring the infant’s heart.
After birth, Vanellope was placed in a sterile plastic bag to reduce infection risk to her heart and keep exposed tissues moist.
“Vanellope was born in good condition. She cried at birth and coped well with the early stabilization and her heart continued to beat effectively,” said Glenfield Consultant Neonatologist Jonathan Cusack.
“At around 50 minutes of age, it was felt that Vanellope was stable enough to be transferred back to the main theatre where she had been born to the waiting anaesthetists, conprivate part heart disease and pediatric surgical teams who began the task of putting her entire heart back inside her chest,” he said.

Police arrests Fulani herdsmen with AK49 rifle

Three Fulani herdsmen have been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for attempted murder and unlawful possession of an AK-49 rifle.
The suspects’ names were identified as Mohammed Bello (40), Muhammed Momoh (30) and Yisau Umoru (18).
It was gathered that they were arrested following information received by the police that one Ige Orisade was attacked and injured by the herdsmen.
The victim was reportedly attacked on his farm at Oke-Odo, Oja-Odan, when he confronted the suspects to know the reason they allowed their cattle to graze on his farm, destroying his farm crops in the process.
The state Police Public Relations, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said an argument ensued between the farmer and the herdsmen, adding that the herdsmen subsequently attacked him with machetes and escaped.
Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said, “On the strength of this information, the Area Commander, Ilaro, Titus Musa, dispatched a team of policemen to the scene and the bush was thoroughly combed in conjunction with local vigilance group.
“At the end of the search, the three herdsmen were arrested.
The items recovered from the suspects are one AK-49 rifle, with serial number, 513; 49 live ammunition, 26 live cartridges and two machetes.
He said efforts were on to apprehend other suspects.
The PPRO said the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered immediate transfer of the suspects from the division to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation.

CBN Writes Banks, Requests For Accounts Without BVN

CBN Writes Banks, Requests For Accounts Without BVN

The Central Bank of Nigeria has written a letter to the Deposit Money Banks in the country, asking them to submit list of customers and bank accounts without bank verification number.
The letter came after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the CBN and 19 banks to freeze accounts without the BVN and got an interim order seeking the forfeiture of deposits in the accounts without the BVN, among others.
A good number of the DMBs, if not all, have complied with the directive from the CBN, according to top bank officials, who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday under the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak on the matter.
Shortly after the November 3 deadline given by the court, commercial banks had started the compilation of bank accounts without the BVN.
However, the DMBs are also lobbying the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to back down on the plan by the Federal Government to seize monies in the bank accounts of customers without the BVN.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had on October 17 ordered the forfeiture of all monies in bank accounts owned by corporate organisations, government agencies and individuals without the BVN.
The forfeiture order, which was issued by Justice Dimgba Igwe, while ruling on an ex parte application filed by the Federal Government through the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, is not final yet.
The owners of the accounts had 14 days to claim ownership of same and show cause why the amounts in them should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.
The court also ordered the banks to advertise the accounts without the BVN in a widely circulated national newspaper as notice to those who might have any interest in them.
Justice Dimgba adjourned until November 16 for the hearing of the substantive application seeking the forfeiture of the sums in the accounts without the BVN.
However, the 19 DMBs named in suit have engaged the services of a top law firm to address the matter, according to top banking industry sources.
Already, the law firm has approached the court for an extension of time to appeal the court order.
Top bank executives privy to the development had told our correspondent last week that all the affected lenders were ready to appeal the court order and had instructed the law firm to file for an extension of time to do so.
“All the banks are ready to appeal the court order. We have engaged the services of a law firm to begin that process. The legal firm is expected to have filed the papers for an extension of time at the court. This will help us prepare for the proposed appeal,” a top executive of a tier-1 bank told our correspondent under the condition of anonymity last Monday.
The court gave the order on October 17 following an application that was filed on September 28.
Justice Dimgba also ordered the banks to file an affidavit of disclosure before the court, showing the names of the affected accounts, the account numbers, outstanding balances, domiciliary accounts and the bank branches where the accounts were domiciled.
Banks did not official provide details of their plan on the BVN matter.
Some, however, told our correspondent they had complied with all regulatory requirements on the BVN matter.
Spokesperson for First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Mr. Babatunde Lasaki, said, “The bank will do what needs to be done on the BVN matter and we will comply with all regulatory requirements on the matter.”
The Head, Corporate Communications, Skye Bank Plc, Mr. Rasheed Bolawinwa, said, “As a regulatory-compliant bank, Skye Bank has complied with the expectations of the regulator concerning the issue of the BVN.”
